THE ROMANY GYPSY CARAVAN

It wasn’t til later in my artistic education that I realised my potential in Graphic Design. My love for Papier-Mâché & Sculpting led me to apply for a degree in Technical Arts and Special Effects at Wimbledon College of Art (UAL).

In my final year of study, I took on the challenging project of designing, constructing and painting a Romany Gypsy Wagon prop from scratch. This project was a collaboration with Hannah Smith, who assisted with construction, but mostly focussed on the interior design.

The books The English Gypsy Caravan, Its Origins, Builders, Technology and Conservation by C. H. Ward-Jackson & Denis E. Harvey and Making Model Gypsy Caravans by John Thompson were excellent guides throughout this project.

Working closely with the Universities Wood Technicians we used a combination of traditional Romany Gypsy Wagon construction techniques along with general wood working skills to see this construction through to a successful ending.
